Question Panzer I Sd.Kfz.101 track link question

I have recently acquired a ground dug Panzer track link from a digger in Latvia. Its a great piece, and am quite excited to add it to my collection. However, I have a question as to the material it is made from. The track pin appears to be steel, as a magnet sticks to it. The track itself though, is non magnetic.
Seems like it would make sense to construct them this way, but I was hoping to clarify what exactly it is made of.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi Opus

If memory serves right, (and, as usual, I am willing to stand corrected by others more knowledgeable than me), I believe that the track links were made from a high quality manganese steel.

    Regards etc

I feel it would be a Austempered Austenitic cast iron.
A hard non magnetic cast iron.
    All the best

That makes perfect sense Ian as mag. steel is hard wearing and castable.
In hind sight you are most likely correct and it's me who is incorrect.
Will look a bit deeper, but I think your right.
    Cheers Ian

Cast Austenitic Manganese steel as opposed to Austenitic cast iron.

I appreciate the quick answers. Seems like manganese steel would be the best choice for tank tracks since it is hard wearing and non magnetic. Thank you!

interestingly the churchill used 3 different types of track link, heavy, cast and manganese. the manganese was the prefered type for general use but was critised for weakness when used on rocky ground i wonder if the germans also found trouble with it ?
