Thanks for the heads up.I'll have to look out for that
It should be an interesting dig. The airforce managed to recover two of the Brownings then gave up and removed the guard from the site. The engine could be thirty feet down.
Very good youtube vid here:
YouTube - ‪Inishowen Spitfire recovery‬‏
The helmet had the pilot's initials written inside!
They say they found lots of .50 cal rounds, now why would a spit have .50 cals? That would have been impressive! It think someone has made a small descriptive error.
Those linked rounds in the vid are rimmed .303s.
Indeed, I just thought it was funny that they thought they were .50 cals. As far as I'm aware, no Spitfire had .50 cals, only .303 and 20mm.
The other common mistake I see in print is .303mm. Now that would be a small round, the size of a pin!
Spitfires had various armament options depending on the wing type. There were versions that used 2x20mm and 2x.50 combinations. I think it was the 'E' wing variant. http://spitfiresite.com/2010/04/conc...g-types.html/3
I think the E wing was from '44. It was used by USA Spits, I think Brits would have used it too but the RAF was evolving towards all cannon armed fighters anyway.
