There are subs based in Scotland-you could have tried putting the NATO stock code number into google to find out what it was-remarkable thing that internet!

I and some friends found an unexploded missile on a beach in Scotland back in 96, quite common apparently from the nearby missile firing ranges on the Outer Hebrides.

Not actually relevant to the thread but it sparked a memory.

Perhaps being used as a bat or bird box, or to hide his stash!

    Whatever its just an opinion.

Have you checked to see if there's corn in it, or slots/ a tray/ spiral feeder in the bottom (see below)??? I'm thinking it could have been converted to a game bird feeder, although a rather narrow one perhaps, but at least it would be waterproof due to it's original design purpose!!.

Or maybe it's been made up to trap small vermin like squirrels or mink, or maybe even insects for entomological studies??? It's the right sort of height off the ground for a feeder and appears to have been attached to the tree for a purpose.

Maybe it contains jewels moved from an old missing Train in Poland....what better place to hide them-in the wilderness of the Scottish Highlands?

Those clever Germans! Using containers that wouldn't be created for 65 years to stash their ill gotten valuables. No wonder nobody could find them until now.
