It seems to be the retractable tail wheel strut from a Boeing B-17.

I dunno. Maybe it's a main wheel oleo?? But there's nothing in the pic to give scale and the numbers are illegible, I'm just taking a punt on the info as I see it tbh.....

Hi,Ned,the big cylinder size is 67cm and the triangle parts 20cm,the marking are:
II 35 99
ASSY M 7271
SER 1578
That's the only readable marking.

It a P-51 Mustang main Oleo leg - upper portion only still attached to the magnesium pivot block assembly which in turn would have been attached to the main wing spar - plenty of photos online, but none seem to show the pivot section with the down lock casting, which yours also has still attached. I have a pair of complete legs, but they are behind my winter wood supply at the moment so cannot photograph for you :-(
