Ken's one is good too, but the best of the best, and the bible as far as I'm concerned is Ludwig Baer's history of the German Helmet 1916-1945

The bible aint cheap! Ive been looking for a copy for less than £130 If anyone has 2 and wants to get rid of one for say.. £60-80... im a willing customer.

A little fairy told me you can get the bible as e-book. And he was right.

Brian, Is the book that you bought the red paper back? That is quite old, but does have some interesting pictures in it. Kelly Hicks also published a Volume 2, in paperback. His better books are the hard cover "SS STEEL: Parade and Combat Helmets of Germany's Third Reich Elite"(R. James Bender Publishing), and the Hicks/Beaver coffee table book "SS HELMETS: The History, Use and Decoration of the Helmets of the Black Corps"(Schiffer Publishing LTD). These 2 books are musts for collectors of SS helmets. Another very good reference book is "Germany's Combat Helmets: 1933-1945 A Modern Study"(R. James Bender Publishing) by Ken Niewiarowicz. All 3 of these books have very good photographs of helmets and decals, and "SS Steel" has some pictures of well known fake SS decals as well. The books are not cheap, but if they help you avoid one fake, it will be worth the investment. Jim G.
