M35 DD SS ET Fat Runes

Not trying to be off topic but why is there darker green around the decal Doug?

    interesting thread.

The helmet has been painted a blue-grey presumably when reissued to the SD. The darker green is the standard issue paint on this M34, as the decal has been painted around.

You can see more of the helmet in my helmet collection thread on GHW2.

hey Doug, I think SD variant it is quite appropriate for this nomenclature. It fits the points you raise quite well.
I also want to mention for the others, this helmet I posted was won by an SD officer named Martin wolf. Wolf worked in Himmler's begleit-kommando and also Karl-Herman Frank's staff in Prague for about a year. so there is a strong SD connection with this pattern. I will post my other SD later.
    Cheers,
    Kelly

I think the SD variant? Yours are named SD officer examples (and Superb I might add!!)

I remember you showing me those and recalled seeing one posted on GHW2 and contacted the owner who had sold to Giorgio who sold it to Brian who I traded one of those killer grey double decal reissues with the cut down straps for it. It is also named to an SD officer so perhaps this branch of the SD sending members to the field requisitioned its own decal, again a boutique purchase? This one was one of the few SS helmets worn in North Africa, the officer was commanding the SD Einsaztgruppen Kommando that was sent there to begin the rounding up of the North African Jews. In fact wasn't there a link between this officer and one of the ones of yours?

Interesting. I have a couple of period pics of the einsatzgruppen wearing these civic type helmets. According to the source this is a photo of the einsatzgruppen in the east rounding up one of their victims. Can't really make out if the decals are early variant types, or your common Pocher. Here u go, gents...

At first glance, it looks like lacquer that has yellowed and toned the paint around the decal. Great helmet!

Here's my SD, pretty much twin to Doug's in terms of the decal variation and the SD / Gestapo connection. Along with the RZM I posted, this makes three of these in the known collecting world to date. Maybe someone out there can turn up another?

This helmet is named to Staffel-Scharfuhrer Friedrich Schroven, of Stapo-stelle Osnabruck. He resembles a prize fighter... probably from the days of turmoil, fighting the socialists and others... Also of note, there is a set of decals underneath these decals, in reverse order, i.e. an SS shield (cant tell what kind) under the party shield, and a party shield under the SD variant runes.

IMO, there's 4. The camo version pictured in your book "SS HELMETS", page 167 is listed as having a Pocher, but for me it looks more like one of these early variants, but that's just my opinion of course.

By the way, Doug, if you look closely at the photo I posted, both are wearing the rare 3 pin M34's like the one u own.

That's a killer Kelly. There has to be a relationship between this and an SD contract in a similar fashion to the VT decal / VT and the FR / LAH and what I presume to be the PB. The Austrian variant is VT / DF or perhaps TK / Elbe?
