OK, wait a second there. I just noticed this is a rear stamped "Q". Its definitely not an SS! There are no known examples of such (at least to my knowledge), but let Doug confirm this.

Almost always on the right yes, however foreign volunteers in the SS often had the shield on the left. A double decal police helmet that has been reissued to the SS will sometimes see the police shield covered with runes (on the left) and the original party shield on the right left in place. I'm sure there are other instances too but very few and far between.
