Thought you might find this period photo of interest, posted by Gran Sasso on WAF forum.
I guess the one on the photo would be an interesting variation but it's far from similar in design to the rather cartoonish "Spock" type decal on the helmet posted here.

Those runes look mighty skinny though, can't see glare affecting that element of the image. Still, Doug knows his decals.
What I was thinking after initially commenting as well --- flash illuminates the metallic texture surrounding the black runes creating a glare that obscures some of the outer border of the runes on all sides--- voila, an illusion of narrow looking runes is created.
No matter how you look at it though, the decal presented here is not related at all to this photo posted over on WAF.
