Got a link? Here are two real ones like this, white runes on black background. So they did do this. But I still think the runes are painted on the helmet as they commonly touched up photos to add medals, etc.

It looks like a coloured/tinted B&W photo, and I agree - the decal
was likely redone as you say Doug.........

I tried looking for a link but couldn't find anything, wish I could get a better look at it! And doug it looks like the one in your second picture but on the right side of the helmet. Maybe one of our uk members can go take a look.

I think this is a retouched image of an Army mountain trooper, whom someone has transformed into an SS man post-war. (Note, for example, the Heer-model EdelweiƟ patch and marksmanship lanyard.)

    Hi HPL,

These patches were used by both army and SS-Gebrigs troopers.

The effect of a white shield with black runes was maybe lost and so went with white on black, or the artist simply didnt know and used artistic licence to convey it?
There was nothing there Doug, the runes were added. The pic you see is of a heer mountain trooper.

You're right, of course; somehow I didn't think about the initial use of army-model sleeve badges by the SS mountain troopers prior to the introduction of the special SS pattern. It was late!
