Update: over the weekend I had the helmet authenticated by two separate reputable SS collectors in Kansas. Despite the poor condition, I guess it's still a conversation piece. Anyway, thank you all for the input. Much appreciated.

Doubt you live anywhere in the Wichita area but did you go to that Military collectibles show that was this weekend?
