Guys with all due respect you either know the intracies of SS decals or you do not, it isnt a 50-50 proposition (you cant be kind of pregnant) and it extends way beyond graphics.

This certainly appears to be an original SS ET decal that has been defaced. The "toolmarking" appears to be simple wear and tear that is consitent on other parts of the shell and there are no clear patterns I see, the rusting underneath parts of the decal are again consistent with wear and the decal clearly shows natural damage on the edges of this wear. Note, no rusting under where it has been defaced except in tiny areas where the paint on the shell has also been damaged exposing raw metal.

Poor storage and natural wear are the reason for the rust and markings, no fake ET decal will tone like this because the fakers do not construct them with the correct materials with which to cause the natural bronzing of the pulver.

As Jim has said, a simple hands on with a 20x loupe will tell the tale of the tape but I would be approaching this helmet confidently.

According to some friends they sell defaced M40 SS for about 2000$ to as high as 3500$ (US Prices) depending on how mutch is left of the logo.
Does that seem right?
I would put this in the 2000$ range.

I really hate discussing price as it is so subjective, and sort of like discussing religion or politics.

With SS helmets you have to remember 1 rule, it is all about the decal. The less the decal the less the value. This one has a personalization as well which helps drive value but it is non researchable as the name has been defaced.

I feel that this helmet would be in the $1200-1750 USD range but personally I would invest that money into a very nice M35 Luftwaffe or Police helmet as defaced SS decaled helmets have limited collector resale value. Others may value this at $2k and I wouldnt have a problem with that either.

Make sure as with anything you get a money back guarantee, if not then post clear head on no flash glare hi detail pics of the decal just to be sure.
