Like Steve, I think the cracks/holes are battle damage. I would expect pick axe damage to result in uniform sized holes. Also, I am not aware of helmets being "demilitarized" by intentionally pick axing them after WWII. It was done on a widespread basis after The Great War. A splendid example of damage inflicted by a pick-axe. Note how the metal is bent inwards at fairly acute angles in parts. A high velocity hit tends to punch out a chunk of metal with minimal inward curvature of the surrounding area. Thanks for showing the images Jim.
