real steel
The wear & age on that strap is undoubtedly real. You can compare the ink stamp SS-VT 1938 to the pic I sent you. You decide. It is in your hands.
If you are convinced...got yourself a very rare & valuable strap.
This helmet was with my Granpda since 1958... I'm 100% good to go with it... Sometimes the luck fairy drops one on ya... haha I have a Plain Jane chin strap, maybe I replace this one and sell it.... Unfortunately, I don't have a gem M35 DD SS at the moment... lol
Thanks for your help Brotha!

Helmets were distributed at depots. Chinstraps were not installed at the factory. They were issued with the helmet at depot level. Being a mid-war helmet, times were tough... maybe they had none. Soldier had to either fend for himself to find one...or they had a stock of used ones to install.
Or...maybe the soldier just liked SS stuff !
