It looks original with the nice wavy quality mark too !
I'm not sure if it has been repainted though

No doubts on originality, a good cross.
Not sure about the paintwork, possibly a repaint as Nick says or perhaps just original but worn paint, maybe the lacquer has lifted giving the look of a repaint.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
Although I have it in my hands, I'm not sure about the paint, though I think it's lacquer lifting.
Anyway, thanks for your opinion on authenticity.
