    Hello everyone!

Trying to pick up this EK1, and wanted to make sure I did my homework. It's a maker marked "6" Zimmermann EK1 in case, in pretty remarkable condition form what I've seen from this maker. I found a thread here that Eisernes Kruez 2 had replied to that shows an example with the high placed mark on the pin, and the reversed catch.

This is the one I'm looking at:

Thanks for any opinions! Assuming I'm able to pick this one up, I think it's a good one. But, I'd rather check twice, pay once.

I think I was able to verify this one well, and also managed to secure this set. Will post pictures when it arrives.

This EK1 has arrived. I was surprised to discover the EK has been vaulted a bit, and I'm not sure what to make of it. People seem to comment favorably on vaulted EK's, but I didn't have any intentions to buy one. But, now that I have one might I ask how a person would know if it was factory, period, or post war vaulted? Did factories vault EK's, or were they done by the recipient or perhaps a jeweler? Seems like it wouldn't be hard vault an EK1 if this is a feature that tends to increase value. What does a person need to know about vaulted EK's? Thanks everyone!!!!

Nice Fritz Zimmermann in lovely condition, congrats on this excellent set!Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse, Fritz Zimmermann for opinions

Some were factory vaulted, others hand vaulted by the recipient. It intends to look better on the uniform.

    Regards,
    Nick

Thanks for the info Nick! I get the impression there's little post war incentive for vaulting an EK, and it could in fact damage it if not done carefully. So, it sounds like this is just another feature of the period. There's so much to learn out there!

I've been looking for other MM6 EK1's, and there are some examples to look at out there. But by and large, I'm not finding lots of them. Is this maker less common than some others? Of those I've found, I can only find two other examples of this variant with the high placed "6." stamp and left opening clasp, which makes me wonder about its rarity. One of those two was cased, and in an identical case to the one I have which makes me wonder if this variant didn't necessarily come in a case with a black tray insert like the mid pin stamped version from this maker.
