The best thinking of which I am aware indicates period manufactured and awarded Iron Crosses, 1813 and 1870, had iron cores. These examples were manufactured through the Third Reich period, so those later manufactured (1920's through 1945) examples of the 1813 and 1870 Iron Cross may indeed have non-magnetic cores as other examples did, i.e. 1914 & 1939 series.

The 1813 and 1870 original period are on magnetic centre, bcause the core is iron casted.
The alloys was discovered and applied, only on heavy industrial field, around the 1890 - 1900.

About the photo of the iron cross, the rear appear cutted by laser, is tipical the violet area near the profile.
Onestly from the foto I've doubt, IMHO... sorry.
