Why is it that the center of the iron cross is megnetic on authentic war time made medals, what material was it made out of

Well I guess the clue is in the name - 'iron' cross.

However, not all crosses had iron or magnetic cores. There are just as many non magnetic crosses with the core made from brass, copper, tombak or zinc.

Having a magnetic core is not a guide to authenticity. You can find fake crosses with magnetic cores too.
