If I'm not mistaken, often recipients would have a second Ritterkreuz...One for daily wear with the unit and another kept at home for formal occasions...Saw one recently without ribbon for $7000...
    cheers,Glenn
    Hi Glenn,

That is correct. The award holder was required to pay for these additional or replacement items, and it's recorded that an RK (cased of course) cost RM 16 to be paid to the Prasidialkanzlei (PKZ) in Berlin. For interest, and possibly the chagrin of modern day collectors a cased set of Oaks & Swords was RM 9, plain Oakleaves were RM 6,35 a cased DKiG was RM15 and a cased DKiS was RM13. These were the prices as of the end of 1942. Those were the days.....

    Regards, Ned.

I remember a famous photo taken a day or so after the fall of Berlin of two Soviet soldiers sitting amidst a huge pile of boxed Crosses on the steps of the Reichs Chancellory... Probably a few thousand of them of more....

I know the photo you're referring to, the awards strewn on the steps were 25 year Treue Dienste Awards along with their cases...

And then...you also have the Field made RK's-such as the U-Boat awards while at sea. Are these awards considered legitimate? They certainly were considered so by the Crew members...
