Interesting that the reverse of the cross is quite tarnished, and yet
the front - along with the inside of the case - are not............

Steve.

Hello Doug and thank you for posting.
I'm not sure about the case or the outer carton but I would be unhappy with the EK first and foremost.
Souval crosses marked L15 were the subject of a thread only recently. Have a look here.
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....
I would stay away from that cross

It doesn't have the short needle so I think that could indicate it is a post war Souval with correct hardware? I think the jury might still be out on that. The case and box look OK to me but I have doubts that the cross is original to the case as i would expect the patina and indeed, rust to have stained the lining.
Here we have an interesting set to debate.
Cross has a Souval frame and maybe the core too but I don't see it well. The back, right, it has the long pin. In my opinion this cross has all contemporary parts just I would like to know when was produced.
About the back look: I think it 's not rust but patina/light oxidation, it could be happen where the back plane of cross don't touch the base of the case so the air/humidity could let that patina.
Case: nice and original, the so called domed case.
Overcarton: it 's a minefield, unfortunately I have no knowledge because I don't collect them.. so I let someone else to say his opinion.
