I prefer the one with the 'round 3' it appears to be an early cross and is hard to find is my guess.

I would buy the Zimmermann, it's a good original cross.
The second cross, the L/16 just doesn't add up. L/16 is the LDO number for Steinhauer & Luck. This company (to my knowledge) is not a recognised maker of round three EKs. (Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.)
Look closely at it, the frames have been apart. On the obverse photo you can see where they've been very crudely filed to remove the excess solder, the edges of the frame are ragged, not acceptable quality for a TR made cross. This is also not a Steinhauer & Luck frame. Something is very wrong with this cross and my best advice to you would be not to buy it. Stick to the Zimmermann '20', that cross is fine.

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

The Zimmermann is a good one as already mentioned.

The other cross is a puzzle. I have been looking at close up shots of the unknown R3 frames in Dietrich's book and they dont match this cross. Also I have scrutinized the beading on an S&L and that does match this cross. Also the pin set up is S&L and the L/16 stamp looks ok.

Adrian is correct however that R3 and S&L are not seen together

Hopefully someone will be able to put our minds at rest

Adrian as I have understood you L/16 didn't do crosses with a round three and this cross a fake.
