Soldbuch and Documents to 320 ID !!
A Soldbuch and documents i recently picked up that came direct from the Veteran Karl-Heinz Brenzel who served with Gren Regt 586 part of the 320 Infanterie Division.
For those of you who are familiar with the Third Battle of Kharkov , Brenzel his Regiment and Division were cut off 25 Km behind Russian lines in Feb 1943 and carried out a famous fighting withdrawal towards the German lines where they eventually met III / SS Panzer Gren Regt 2 ( the SPW Bn of the LAH commanded by Jochen Peiper ) who had been detailed to resue them. The Division brought on over 1000 wounded men on their remaining vehicles and Panye Wagons whilst fighting 3 Soviet Divisions in temperatures of minus 30.

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

That Soldbuch has certainly seen some action!
As an aside I have a Wehrpass to a soldier who served in Peiper's battalion during the raid to rescue the 320.ID.
-
Excellent Kevin two real pieces of personal history from a known OstFront engagement !

How long did he stay in hospital for in 1943? It looks like the Wound Badge in Black was upgraded to Silver if the award entries are anything to go by.
-
a great find by any standard.

Here is the VWA in Silber document Kevin , it was upgraded as a result of three seperate wounds in 1943 , the last two were for the summer fighting in Belgorod and Kharkov .

Stunning little set with great history, and what an honor it must be to get it directly from the vet.
