    Hi All
I've just bought a very battered SS Soldbuch, it came with photocopies of the guy's service record. For some unexplained reason the last owner of the Soldbuch sold the original service record. The Soldbuch is in bad condition, it's missing it's front and back cover, some pages are ripped, stained etc. his record shows that it was returned for a replacement.
The buch was issued to a JOHANN STOGER who started his service as an SS-Anwarter in 9/SS ART ERS REG in February 1941, joining 1/SS ART REG " NORD " in April 1941, then joining 7/SS GEB A.R, SS GEB DIV 2 "1V in July 1942. The last mention of him on his service record says that he was promoted to SS-Rottenfuhrer in March 1943.
Could anybody answer a couple of questions for me. Firstly am i right in assuming that Stoger's last two units where in the SS Divisions " Nord " and " Prinz Eugen "
Secondly how can i find out if the guy survived the war, is there any way of checking if he was a casualty.
Any information would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Graham

The 7/SS-Geb-Art would usually indicate the 7th Battery but of what particular artillery regiment it is hard to say as the naming convention doesn't really make sense. As Paul has requested, posting pictures will make it easier for others to help.

    Thanks for replying chaps
Unfortunatly i'm a bit of a technophobe and haven't got round to finding out how to post pictures. I've studied the Soldbuch more closely, and the following is exactly what it says -

    1/ SS ART REG "NORD"

    7/ SS-GEB.A.R.SS-GEB. DIV "1V"

    Hope this is more clear

The first one is 1 Batterie SS Artillerie Regt " Nord " , second one 7 Batterie SS Mountain Artillerie Regt SS Mountain Divison 1V , as Hucks has stated the second one doesn't make sense as a unit designation !!

There were six Waffen-SS mountain divisions:

    • 6. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord"
    • 7. SS-Freiwilligen-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
    • 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Handschar"
    • 21. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Skanderbeg"
    • 23. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS "Kama"
    • 24. Waffen-Gebirgs-(Karstjäger-)Division der SS

Note that only "Nord" was designated as an SS-Gebirgs-Division; the others - ethnic German/foreign formations - were classified as Freiwilligen- or Waffen-Gebirgs-Divisionen; the same suffixes applied to their component montain artillery regiments.

Please have a closer look at the "1V" - Could it be that it is actually an "N"? (for "Nord")?

    Hi All
NPL2008 has come up with the answer, i'v checked the unit with a strong magnifying glass, and it does say " N " for NORD. To the naked eye it did look like the Roman numeral 1V.
    Thanks everyone
