The UK couldn't accomodate them all Lars , plus it would have tied up much manpower to guard them , in the UK many probably thought of escape like many of the Allied prisoners but once they were shipped to the States and Canada any thoughts of an escape back home were gone !!

i was told here in the USA that Some German POWS stayed after the war. They didn't have any homes or family left after all the bombing. Did a lot of POWS stay in Canada After the war like here in the US?

Many German , Volksdeutsche and Foreign volunteer POW's stayed on in the US , UK and Canada after the war in particular those whose homes were now under Soviet Control in East Germany , Baltic States or Sudetenland , Banat etc etc.

As far as i'm aware in 1946 in the UK they were given the option to remain or return home , of those who did return home many in fact came back to the UK as they had nothing to return home too as you have pointed out Guns.
