    I wonder if that little fella is still alive, could be 3 feet wide by now still sporting the cross. Nice pic

    Sadly, 'Hermann' the tortoise never survived the winter hibernation of '42 whilst based near Stalingrad. The Geschwaderkommodore had him imortalised as a piece of trench art on his desk until he was lost after many adventures, during the german retreat in August 1944.

    This reminds me that my grandfather once told me that he had kept a turtle as a pet/mascot in Russia. (Housed in an ammunition crate, if I recall correctly.) He never knew what became of the animal after he was seriously wounded and sent home.

    [Sorry, don't know whether he had painted a Balkenkreuz on it or if that was just a Luftwaffe thing. ]
