long time no see leander hope your good as to the writing still trying to learn german but awesome photos all the same
First one:
"Klein [...]
ein Großkind
unseres Quartierwirts"
...meaning...
"Little [...]
a grandchild
of our acommodation host"
(Sorry, not quite sure about the kid's name)
The second one:
"Enthaltsamkeit ist das Vergnügen
an Dingen welche wir nicht
kriegen
Malerei in der Unterkunft
des [...]-Batl. [= Bataillons] in Berkaak"
...meaning...:
"Austerity is drawing pleasure
from those things that we do not
get
Painting in the billets
of the [...] Battalion in Berkaak"
The rhyme "Enthaltsamkeit ist das Vergnügen an Dingen welche wir nicht kriegen." is a quote from the famous German caricaturist, painter and poet Wilhelm Busch. It is slightly misquoted here; it should be "Sachen" instead of "Dingen", but these are synonyms.
That quote can be seen on the far right of the photograph as part of the humorous and slightly naughty wall painting. (Which, of course, shows a soldier dreaming of some of those unobtainable things...)
Not quite sure about the abbrevation in front of "Batl."; it could be "Pol." for "Polizei".
Berkaak would appear to be Berkåk in Norway.
WOW, thanks HPL2008!!
You are the king!
Could the name in the photo be "Alvin" HPL2008?
