I think they are digging trenches for the airfield defence. The figure standing to the right is RAD.

The first word is "Splittergrabenbau" = "construction of slit trenches / trench shelters". ["Splitter" = fragment, shrapnel, splinter; "Graben" = trench]
These trenches are being built at the Rogau airfield to provide the personnel on the ground some cover during an air raid (not as fighting positions).

I liked this one, even though it looks like the negative wasn't in the best of shape when the photo was printed. In some ways, I think it adds to the raw grittiness of the image, a bunch of guys sitting in shallow, dirty hole in the ground. The photo also exhibits the better end of clarity and detail.
