    Hi Folks,

    This period photo I picked up has me intrigued, and any insights you may have would be appreciated.
    I think it is a Luftwaffe AA crew in training, but don't know for sure, as I can't see any insignia or Luftwaffe decals on any of the helmets.
    The only visible helmet decal is a national shield that one of the blokes has on his lid.
    Any ideas on what they are working on? Possibly an AA gun
    All opinions welcome.

    Brad.

    Definitely looks like an AA crew Brad. I can sort of make out a gun carriage and optics in the photo.

    I think you are right Ade,
    Just googled and found this pic, it's from a different angle but looks to be the same piece of equipment, Flak rangefinder.

    Cheers,
    Brad.

    Chris, that photo I told you about a while ago came today. The writings look like they are "anti-Greek" or maybe poking fun??

    The first one..... Xanthippe Athen - "Shrew" or mouse-like Athen?? I dunno
    Hey mate, that took a looong time to arrive.
    I tend to agree with the opinion of Tempelhof.
    Maybe Andreas could give us his opinion too.
    Looking for the photo albums of Leutnant Emil Freitag, 3. / G.R. 377

    A couple of nice photos I just received depicting a soldier being awarded the EK 2 in the field/and proudly posing with the EK2 afterwards. The one awarding it is written on the back as being "Major Doring" (?)... not 100% on his name though and the time and name of the place reads (I think) "Asheim" --- "24.4.1940", which would place this 2-3 weeks into Operation Weserübung/Invasion of Norway

    Anyone care to help translate/accurately decipher the writing on the back of these photos? I always try to note as much available info on photos as I possibly can for my digital "archive".

    I am not 100 % sure on the first letter of Iron Cross holder's surname. The letter looks a bit odd, but it resembles the "M" in "Major", so I'd go for "Mäckler".

    The first one says:

    "Uffz. [= Unteroffizier] E. Mäckler erhält am 24.4.1940
    in Asheim als erster vom III. Batl.
    [= Bataillon] von
    Major Doring das E.K. II
    [= Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse]"

    ...i.e.:

    "As the first man of the 3rd Battalion, Unteroffizier E. Mäckler receives the Iron Cross 2nd Class from Major Doring at Asheim on 24/4/1940"

    The second one:

    "Uffz. [= Unteroffizier] E. Mäckler
    als erster E.K.
    [= Eisernes Kreuz]-Träger
    April 1940
    bei Asheim
    "

    ...i.e.:

    "Unteroffizier E. Mäckler
    as the first holder of the Iron Cross
    April 1940
    near Asheim
    "

    Aaahh... thank you very much! Now if I could only figure out where "Åsheim" is... there seems to be several places here in Norway with that name. I'm guessing if I knew more about this "3rd Batallion" I'd have an easier time narrowing it down.
    The only "Major Doring" I found via Google was a Major in the Luftwaffe but I'm guessing the one in the photo is an army Major..?
