It's pretty much a guessing game (at least with Gimp) I make all my colors, skin, hair, eyes, uniform, trees, ground ect...
Sometimes It takes awhile to get the colors right though, so when I do, I write down the "color number" So the next time I go to color a photo I don't have to try to get the color right again, I just type in the number and I'm good to go
Awesome pictures. Great work on the coloring as well...thanks for posting everyone!
Cheers, Edwin
Just for information, the photo in post #20 is actually a colour photo of a re-enactor taken from a book called Waffen-SS Uniforms in Colour Photographs by Andrew Steven and Peter Amodio. The same guy is modelling original SS uniforms for photo reference and can be seen in the book wearing everything from an SS Panzer officer's uniform to a Prinz Eugen uniform to a Totenkopf officer's uniform. He is actually on the front cover of the book!
As an aside from that, if anyone can help with colouring a photo for me I would be grateful. I have a U-Boat emblem I would like to paint onto a model but have no idea of the colours to use. If you can help, please PM me.

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
