The az. interior crank handle casing does indeed have "AZIMUTH HAND CONTROL LEFT <----> RIGHT" cast into it.
The az. interior clutch casing is a bit further forward (at the other end of the chain) and has "AZIMUTH HAND CLUTCH IN <----> OUT" cast into it.

Thanks Paul - you are right, it was the hand control I looked at - The "In <---> Out" inscription would certainly seem to match with something like a mechanical type control, such as a clutch - all we need now is a photo!

Been an interesting search though as I have just identified a panel I was given recently as being the tail gunner's control panel from a B-29 Superfortress
