Article about: They obviously never knew what hit 'em. But it is sobering to realize that indiviuals died wearing those lids... heads turned to strawberry jam.

sorry to say ifear the holes were made by a drill bit, rather than small arm fire, if this was so the coin would be bent out of recognition with 6 hits, just my view. phil
iv found the odd coin on an airfield like this, obviously used as target practice pinned to a tree etc, i wouldnt say a a drill bit has done this , ever tried drilling a hole side by side, or on the very edge of a piece of metal...........

Here are two finds which I did with a friend of mine. They are both from a village called Sint Joost. In Januari 1945 it saw heavy combat between Fallschirmjäger of the Hübner Regiment and 176 Infanterie Division and the British 7th Armoured "Desert Rats".

First is the lid of a French box used to store propellant charges. The Germans used several beutewaffen French guns in this region. It has an impact hole from a large caliber shell.

Second is a German M40 helmet with a large splinter hole on the top. The liner is missing.

Another one from the Saarbrücken area. It is from a Reichswehr buckle.

From the same area as the above, the back end of an MP40 and a smashed magazine. They were found together only a few metres apart.

    Hi Bart,

Did you insisted enough in the perimeter where you found those two above?

Not yet. We covered a pretty large area, but it was found near a path and on the other side was heavy underbrush and a lot of those damn ticks. We plan to return in the winter and search for the other part. It was probably 'deactivated' this way by US soldiers.
