hard to say, it seems like sawn in 2 pieces. Not to mention the crater in the middle. It seems a bit too much of a damage sustained in a single shot

at first i just assumed collecter had perhaps cut to sell or keep other half
but then i thought perhaps done wartime for id purposes..
you think bullet ??
i guessed shrapnel
although 2 other guys said bullet

Hi Fraser,

I think it was some fragment or shrapnel. The tag appears melt? What is it made of? I cannot say from the picture.
As for the the other damage, I doubt it was for ID purpose; they would have taken just the lower half. It could be as you say: they sawed it in 2 pieces and doubled the money.

MUMMASARE.ESTONIA..
found on site of former SS positions
where ART RGT 54, & SS NORDLAND
were in action..
before and after cleaning
