Paul, if you are interested in that theater, there are several books available. It just so happens I'm researching Nord, so I am aware of most of them. How's your German?

My Great-Grandfather fought in Kiestinki, where these excavations are taken place. I will add some photos of Kiestinki that he took.

    1) The same destroyed locomotive, that Karell posted.

    2) Finnish troops disembarking off of a train.

Anyone ever find a SS M42 helmet at Karelia? Another Russian digger says they weren't there.

But have any M42 SS relics found in Karelia? Or did the Germans pull out of that area before 1942?

Well like the threads have, yes people have found SS helmets in Northern Karelia and Germans resided there for the whole war.

Maybe you misunderstand. The M42 German helmet came out in 1942, but the SS Nord Div was at Karelia in 1941. I'm told that NO M42 SS relic found at Karelia as they pull out from that area before equiped with the 1942 helmet. I also see only M35 & M40 SS relics in these dig site and in past many years no M42 also.

It's all in Wikipedia. SS-Nord remained in Kiestinki after 1941 etc.
