    It's one of either two things Spotter, both very similar in appearance.

    Buckle to facilitate tightening of a military issue haversack. Buckle to help short the length of a standard British gas mask bag loop.

    I have three exactly the same as yours, all from a WW2 airbase.

    Does the part in the middle move?It looks like it once had two prongs..

    I don't think it's a 37 haversack webbing buckle ..

    The 37 buckle was flat to both sides, and had an opening in one face.

    yes it moves and appears to have two very worn or broken off prongs

    It not military issue as a rule, it look like a two prong roller buckle to me, these have been around for about two hundred years, and are normally associated with leather goods such as straps, belts and saddlery tack. It could possible be from an officers Sam Browne belt but again this would not be per regulations.
