I would advice to cleaned carefully the are where the remains where found, I don't think that somone use DNA analysis, and the all the Europe has the DNA database to check it. For sure it's a joke about it, only the way to recognize the soldier is ID, some kind inscriptions on the field gear, and the wallet, and all the papers must be very carefully investigated.

i was watching a doco the other day and the presenter (Steve Urin spelling) was diving on a hellcat wreck somewhere PNG. It is apparently a deep water wreck hence it's condition - in viewing the pilots seat i were able to see the shinbones and boots. I hope that the Americans where told.

I believe that with the proper care the airplane serials could be discovered and the remains returned home. additionally it covered some coastal HMG positions that the Japanese had used - inside of which scattered human remains could be discerned. mostly fragments of bones and teeth.

He also dived on truk lagoon (google operation hailstorm) and noted that alot of the japanese ships still had intact human remains on board. If you can stomach his presentation style the doco goes by the title ghosts of war.

This is probably the best thread I've seen here in years...from a historian/collector's viewpoint, and from a humanitarian one most of all. May you and others with the opportunity to do this be blessed!

Hi Jan. No we did find some magasine's for the sumi but no finnish remains. One of the russians did tell us about finding a finnish soldier not so far from Kuusamo.
