    Hi All

This item was found on a WW2 airfield by a friend of mine. Initially I thought it was an American rifle grenade but the tail seems too short. I then thought it could be a 2inch mortar with the tail fins rotted off, but why the circular bit on the end of the tail ?

So, the question is, what is it ?? Oxy bottle ? Fire extinguisher ? Ordnance ?

    Thoughts please

It is roughly 12inches long by 2inches in diameter.

It don't think it's a 2inch Mortar becasue the fins are made from alloy.

Is that blue paint in the middle?

Not sure WH. I've only got that one photo and no other information. The blue bit looks like a small patch of corroded iron to me, not paint.

That's a gate valve handle on the top ...
Most probably a moisture trap for a pressurised airline/oxygen system.

I have a couple of White Phosperous rockets that look very similar. I will check them tonight to see if it's a match. If so be very careful till you know for sure. Bad things can happen with WP.

Thanks Mil As I said, this is a friends find and not mine........but he did have the common sense to leave it where he found it until a positive ID can be made. He realises that EOD will need to come out if it turns out to be ordnance.

Looks about the right size and shape to be an H-1 bailout oxygen bottle, with the knob and dial on the top.

Don't think its a bailout / portable oxy bottle, wrong handle & no gauge that I can see - Looks like a CO2 bottle for inflating a large aircraft emergency dinghy - is it wire bound? I have one from a mosquito somewhere that is identical to this in condition from a dig.

However, I am a long way away and its your limbs / life, so if in any doubt, best call is leave it alone and report it though.
