Will you completely rule out the "Engineers/bridge" idea? After all there are quite a few rivers in the area.

    Cheers
Highly unlikely that a bridging unit would appear on a tactical map such as this , as this one shows the actual Frontline units , i think Andreas has nailed it with the Lehr Brigade !

Lehr Regiment Brandenburg was certainly on the orbat of XXXXIX Korps at that time so is also the possible answer

Lars, you're right that there was lots of artillery in the area and also lots of engineer units, just XXXIX. Armeekorps alone had the following units:

    Nebelwerfer-Regiment 51
    schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 733
    schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 816 (o. 1.)
    schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 620
    schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 646
    II. / Artillerie-Regiment 55
    II. / Artillerie-Regiment 44
    1. / schwere Artillerie-Abteilung 427
    Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 210
    Beobachtungs-Abteilung 30

    Pionier-Regimentsstab z.b.V. 614
    Pionier-Bataillon 43
    Pionier-Lehr-Bataillon 1 mit Brüko 43
    leichtes Radfahr-Straßenbau-Bataillon 502
    Brückenkolonne B 626
    Brückenkolonne B 644
    Brückenkolonne B 657
    Brückenkolonne B 1/403
    Brückenkolonne B 535
    Brückenkolonne B 612
    Brückenbau-Bataillon 548

    Lars,
I've searched a bit further concerning the map.

It should actually come from the book "Panzer-operationen" by Hoth.

I'm pretty sure that the year is 1941 and the date should be the day, when the Smolensk pocket was finally closed.

L.Br. refers to Lehr Brigade 900 as stated above.

    BR,
    Michael
