Metal Detecting Rally turns into unexpected WW2 Dump Dig!!!
Hi all
Today i was invited to join a charity MD rally for the a new club local to me that i've only just joined. A great turn out with almost 40 people and raised a massive £400
I knew that there are two former RAF Bases within 2 miles, but had low expections of finding any thing WW2 with my mind set to older stuff.
How wrong i was
The Rally was set to start at 10am before we set off they took a group shot of us, going to be in local paper
with 6 fields to choose from i thought it was best just to start in field one
Straight away hit signals, all different scrap metals about half and hour later i had my frist interesting find!
made to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935, when they had been on the thrown for 25 years, but also advertising Emu Australian Wines.
I was happy with this and could have gone the rest of the day finding nout.
Carried on and started to find a lot of deep iron objects so i decided to move onto field 2, at first i thought to myself oh god why have i gone here the ground is all built up. Luckily the old man and uncle were on the other side of the field i quickly walked over to them about to rant on about the field, as i got to them me uncle shouted 'i've just found an old penny and ye old mans got 3 sixpences' i suddenly realised that it was only half the field that was built up. I started a grid patten
About an hour later i had most of this
Batterys running low so headed back to the truck for some lunch. after lunch went back to field 2 found 5 more coins. Then i decided to try field 3 as i was wanted to find out if the coins carried on, they did i found 2 more, carried on walking for a bit and the coins dryed up suddenly out of nowhere a RAF button turned up ! a few more steps and
At first i thought i had found an Training/encampment site but quickly realized it was a dump site due to the vast amount of melted lead, it just seemed to be in one area, Buckles by the ton coming up two guys detecting near me must have had 30 buckles each and also each having a RAF badge and buttons.
i spent the rest of the day going around and around this bit theres still loads of singals left couldn't get them all
The dump field
I've still got more stuff to clean Buckles, Gas mask bits, Watch, Interesting objects ect
Hope i havn't bored you guys too much

Re: Metal Detecting Rally turns into unexpected WW2 Dump Dig!!!
Hi WH,
Thats an excellent result with some great gear in there and from the pics it looks like one of those sites you couldn't tell was a dump just by looking at the land. Whilst digging did you get any aircraft alloy, white crockery frags, bits of bottles or the usual rusted tins?
Perhaps it was a satelite RAF encampment for one if not both of the airfields.
Cheers for posting.

Hi mate, no pieces of aircraft although im told a practice plane crashed somewhere near by, It was mainly brass items, alot of molten lead inbetween the relics. no coinage found on this part of the field. There was also 2 ponds behind this field, i didn't see them on the day.
