They are getting harder to find,I have seen them for sell before for alot of money .I am trying to get some more from a friend in Meuse Argonne.

With most WW1 items that is the case; they increase in value a lot the past few years

you are right In the pass couple of years the ww1 stuff has jump in prices since the 90 anniversary.

The short answer to your question is they were used in WWI and earlier, right back to when knights rode warhorses to battle!
