Week in Normandy and only managed one day out. Bit of battlefield walking and a few hedgerow finds mostly with my new 'self gifted' assistant (Garratt probe) ..........

Found close to St Lo all in positions manned by Fallschirmjäger 3 and fought over in 1944

Finally, these were found close to British commando positions at the point of a German assault from a nearby sniper school in 1944 but they baffle me - don't recognise the headstamp (VS 2 N 40). I think VS is a French code and 40 the year of manufcture but then what was it doing here and what would have fired them? Help!

Nice finds. Not with a metal detector, just with a probe? Mmmmm very discreet. I wonder if I should get one?

    Hey Billers,
Love the finds. I'm trying to get some leave arranged but my boss is a real pain in the ...
The cartridges on the last 2 pictures are french MAS 36 casings(7.5mm), the same as we found on the other position, but these are WW2 dated unlike mine who were post war frangible rounds.
The German army used a lot of those for training and combat during the occupation.

nice finds Billers...never used a probe before ... how do you actually use it without a main detector - do you just poke around with it and dig, or dig and poke around, or were these surface finds?

    cheers

Used a detector to ensure I was in the right area but soon realised that most of the stuff was no more than 1 - 2 inches into the hedgerows. The Garrett probe is great as you will get an intermittent signal at that distance - then its down to the trusty trowel! The Garrett is probably my best buy ever!

Love your saddle drum by the way - great find. Must compare notes on Normandy travels offline someday.
