Were you stationed on Iwo for any length of time? You said the tunnels still looked the same. How much of them did you get to see? Was that the official reasoning for the tunnels being "verbotten", remains and UXO?
Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, this fascinates me to no end. When I was in the Navy I would crawl over old Spanish forts in the Caribbean. I climbed almost to the top of Gibralter when the RAF asked me kindly to go away. I snuck into a castle/fortess on Corfu Greece that was off limits for a look around. Of course there were no remains or UXO there.

This guy has a web site with pictures of the Japanese recovering some mummified bodies from a blown bunker on IWO, I think the pictures are from the 1980's.
