Nicely photographed. I like your two sided light box. Makes all the difference when photographing glass.

Some of the bits that came home with me on Saturday:

    Assorted glassware etc.

    Attachment 340732

    RAF 6-pin socket 10H/393

    Attachment 340731

    Kolynos toothpaste

    Attachment 340734

    Aircraft hinge

    Attachment 340733

104 part number prefix, indicating P-51B.
The full part number is 104 42058 36, and there's a nice ANA A23 inspection stamp on the other side.

    Attachment 340730

Seeing as the on-site Fighter Group had less than ten B-model Mustangs assigned to them in total, and one of those crashed on the airfield itself, there's only a small number of them that this part could have come from...

More photos to follow when I've finished cleaning the rest of the bits, and when the cleaned blue WD poison bottle turns up again after vanishing sometime on Sunday afternoon.

Thanks again to Steve for organising the dig,
    PB

    Good stuff LS,

I've checked all the P-51 manuals I could lay my hands on, as this piece is pretty much as we'd concluded at the time.
It's mounted on the left-hand side of a Mustang cockpit, by the pilot's left shoulder. The lift-the-dot tabs hold a zippered canvas combined flare pistol holster and flare cartridge container, so it is easily accessible in-flight and can also be easily removed and carried by the pilot in the case of a forced landing etc.

I've been poring over the other manuals regards the crescent wrench, and I'm afraid I'll need to borrow it to see which of the primary suspects it should fit to conclusively identify it.

    Thanks Mark,

It's one of the fold-out jobs from Maplins that comes with the lights and camera mount, all contained in a carrying bag.
I normally use it for photographing my watches, and is often on offer at about £25-ish.

    All the best,
    PB

    Lucky,

What are the black bung type things you got from site 3? I found a few but left them because I didn't know if they were modern or not. The ones I found didn't have any markings do yours?

Here's my first, and best, find of the day. P-51B cockpit panel (thanks Paul Bellamy for the id) lurking in the leaf mould.

Great day and nice to meet everyone.

    Hi Paul,

I'm pretty certain the 'Crescent wrench' is a standard vehicle oil filter removal spanner, put it around the filter, pull anti clock, tooth/teeth bite in and off it screws.

Here's a pic of a couple of modern ones.

    Regards,Ned.

A few more non-aircraft related finds. Once I'd spent 2 hours digging up the base fireplace and rockery, I moved and these came up.

Bottles L-R: Smith & Co mineral bottle; Fitch's Shampoo; Squibb US medicine bottle; Yeast Vite; Unknown.
