Very cool ~ AND so close to us here in far north QLD Australia ~

The Solomons have beena bit of a problem for while but I do beleive the Australia military (peace keeping forces) have evacuated from the area for some time now ~

A bloke I used to work with came across wrecked US aeroplanes somewhere up near Weipa a good few years back, probably cannibalised and left there after the war ended. His photos were very interesting.

Yes there are quite a few aircraft MIA tales true and beyond around these parts ~

The USAF was based at Mareeba (40 km ) form home base and they flew out Mareeba to bomb Rabaul ~ plus there were planes that crashed and even went missing within Cooee of home here ~ including a US plane that went missing and is supposedly lost on Mt Bartle Frer which we look onto ~

Another was a plane that was flight from Cook town to Cairns ~ vanished over the Daintree~

Yet another was a night patrol of RAAF that flew out of Mareeba in 1942 to do a night submarine patrol and vanished ~

The most famous was the story true of the USAF Aero cobras that went missing up in the Gulf country ~ probably the same one your friend was talking about ~

The entire flight went down ~ ran into a storm and burnt up all their fuel load ~ the planes all crashed across the top end of the Gulf.

Here is one of them that was retrieved from the top end in the 1980s~ It was rebuilt but never flew again !
