Default Some relics from the Somme

Just a few pics of stuff I found when visiting the area of the Leipzig salient on the Somme recently. Just shows theres still stuff to be found. If anyone can ID the fuzes that would be great, and also if anyone knows what the item in the last photo is I would like to know. I didnt pick it up as I was unsure of what it was.

    Many thanks.

Is that "thing" shown in the 3th picture a Pine?
I don't realy know what that is in the last photo. It could be a ammo container for canons.. Was the metall thick or not.. this could help.. what was the lenght of it?

    cheers,

Hi, the thing in the 3rd pic is a live MIlls bomb :0 It was obviously left there. The metal on the tube was quite thick, and appeared to be hollow, but with so much mud in it I couldnt be certain.

    Hi there,

The Mills bomb (grenade) is also called a pine as pine-aple cause it looks like a pine-aple.. I can't realy help with the tube without any markings etc..

    cheers,

The "long thing" is I believe the bottom of the fuse from an 18 pounder. It would protude beneath the fuse head, and into the charge. AND Mill's bombs were NOT called Pineapples.

This phrase was coined by the American troops in WW2, because their type of grenade DID resemble a pineapple.

And all 3 fuses are German I think

At least one is a 77mm

Spitace41, Herr Brandon is correct... all three look to be German 7.7cm shell fuzes.
    Prost! Steve.
