Rick many of these awards were handed out and some men won quite large numbers the silver was for 1 and the gold was for 5 , some guys won golds and then more silvers !!
Knights Cross winners Oberleutnant Gunther Viezenz had 21 kills , Friedrich Anding 18 kills, many frontline combat soldiers had 4 or 5.
The tank kill had to be made in close combat either with grenades , magnetic mines , Hafthohladung or panzerfaust , the award wasn't for Anti Tank gunners

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.

But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

Thanks for the info Paul, interesting reading indeed, to achieve that many tank kills at close quater would take nerves of steel, so a well deserved award.
