Soaking time depends on the amount of rust and the rate at which the paint fades. You'll need to check on the piece every 1/2 hour or so and stop when you think things look about right. In fact, if it were me, I would probably try a bath in white vinegar first, it is slow (could be 24 hours or more) but there is not so much danger of fading the paint.

From experience white vinegar is a killer. I know it's different in every country, depending on the quality and kind of the grapes used, but the one i used was so strong it even "eats" the metal. The paint wouldn't last even a few minutes.

I used white vinegar on 4 relic grenade heads. They were soaked for 3 days, the rust washed away and the paint was fine. Perhaps Cypriot vinegar is ultra strong!
