Items were almost never marked to individual uboats, and mugs are no exeption. A certain fake.

Far too deep to do any kind of a recovery, recovery specialists only go that deep when there are precious metals involved (GOLD) I don't thin they would go all the way down there to bring back a coffee mug, a very unlikey story.
Someone has gone through some trouble to make this and the story to go with it.

Thankyou for the kind and not so kind comments guys. Lucky for me i only paid a few pounds for this piece, although i'm a bit pissed with the reputable outlet where i purchased this and a few other items. Just one other item then for you all to cast your eyes over. A Kreigs egg cup ????Probably a lousy fake too. Thoughts and comments welcome.

Where did you get the mug from? The eggcup has a much better chance.

Hi Guys, If I'm honest I started an account here to add to this discussion - but having looked around the site could be on here a lot longer!!!

I agree with one of the earlier guys saying about the damage done by time under water my degree is in Archeology and pottery just does not come out of the sea looking like that its normally damn near pristine!!! However my real reason for posting is the discussion on usage of U-Boat Number of items of pottery.

I grew up in south western France and went to school in Bordeaux, My best friend from school and I for year used to drink from a set of U-177 and Eagle Marked China. The story with it (Now bear in mind this was near on 40 years ago now!!!) Was it was simply left by the commanding officers at my friends house. He had full dinner plates etc all were marked with both an eagle and a U-177 all in brown. I was lucky enough to end up with half of the dinner service when his mother died and its stayed with me ever since. I have (Periodically) Over the years been trying to find more variants / examples relating to the u177 to put together items but they are very scarce to come by sadly.

So basically what I am saying is - As illogical as I agree it sounds I know for a fact having been there and seen them many moons ago that they did intact have numbered porcelain items. What makes original and what makes the repros.... I can't tell you sadly but I can certainly shed some light on that.

    Thanks

Can you post some photos of your U177 porcelain please?
After 3 years your new information may cause some rethinking of opinion.

I, too, would like to see some photos. But, keep in mind that 40 years ago would place it right in the middle of the 70's which were the heyday of fake TR items. Back then you could find anything and everything marked with swastikas and claims and stories higher than the Moon itself.
