    HI all

I had a spare couple of hours so went and had a dig about at the USAAF dump I've visited on previous occasions. I wasn't there long but did have some interesting and intriguing finds.

    Before cleaning.....

And after. I have kept the glass as, whilst it isn't marked, it was found 4 feet down in amongst other datable items so I know it is from the war.

A strange item. Reminds me of an old fashioned surround to a dial. No markings on it I'm afraid.

Another strange object. From this side it looks a bit like the stock to a weapon....

Last but not least cartridges and/or bits of. The 'complete' 50cal is interesting as it has been fired and then aparently cut in half, and the two halves rejoined. I know this because the cartridge is bigger than a standard 50cal by the width of the groove you can see. I am desperate to get into it as it may be a 50cal lighter made by the groundcrew ! Or perhaps a message in a cartridge !! Need to get it soaked in WD40 for a while. Is that the best way to loosen off a join like this without breaking the object ?

Steve, I've also found the bits of brass that are inside your stock shaped bit of wood just im missing the wooden part ! I came across quite slot of them in a heap and posted them but didn't really get much of a reply I've got all my bits crossed that someone may ID it better from your photos.
Try adding heat to get that .50 open it might just have some crud that needs loosening.

    Andy.

I dont think that its a stock, i think its the box to carry this object in, and i'm thinking its some form of guage

The "US mess tin cutlery handle. US on this side...." is a mess kit knife handle. There was two types, one piece stamped metal version and yours with a black handle. The knife was the only piece to have this black handle.

    Nice one Steve

I find that the black ones are very easy to find but the metal ones are usely rare to find on digs just like spoons are easy to find and forks are not.
