I believe it was about 5 years ago that the RAF decided that the centerpiece of one of their RAF base entries gates needed some restoration... while many bases have decomissioned WW2 or jet aircraft on static display this base had a very rare Barnes Wallace TallBoy 22,000 pound Earth Quake bomb on display.
While scaping and repainting the huge piece someone noticed that it was fused... when further examined it was discoverd that they had the only completely live TallBoy bomb in existance right there at their airbase....

Theres one at the entrance to the Defence EOD school at Chatam dean, and theres another at BBMF so could have been one of them, I'll ask my mate when I see him because he's told me a similar story. He told me that it was a WW2 Vet who pointed out that the drill and live bombs were identical and there was no way of telling the diffrence, and that it may well be live, which it was. The story went that it was put on a trailer to be taken for refurb, when the comments were made. It was discovered to be live, and no one would remove it from the trailer. So a phonecall was made to MT, who said its a brand new trailer, and the EOD guy said ...WAS a new trailer!

Not everywhere in the Netherlands are explosives just under the surface.
At the most places there's nothing at all. Near major citys it's a totally other story of course
If i can't ID something that looks like an explosive i won't touch it at all. Other people have to do the same. This will protect people to do stupid things like this bloke that startet this thread.

Its not only irrespossible people who muck around with live munitions, Once whilst in the police force we had a call to say that a workman who had been digging footings for an extension to a mentally challenged hostel and learning centre had found something in the ground which had fins sticking upwards. One of our police officers went to investigate and later came back with a very nice live incendary bomb in the boot of the police vehicle, anyway after the police station and surrounding houses were cleared of their occupants the BDT were called who came and took the thing away a parting remark from the officer in charge was to the effect of " YOU STUPID F%%%ER" .The senior officers of my force had the police officer in question taken to HQ, where they promptly awarded him a bravery award and was mentioned in the force newsletter .Apparently there was no award for stupidity.

I think it's a overall problem of mankind i believe.
We homo sapiens are to curious to know what something is or what function it has. Like the story about a box with a little hole in it with the writing "don't look trough the hole" who can resist to look in the hole? I believe almost nobody
I think we need to learn that we can't understand everything that's hidden in the soil of our planet called, mother earth.
The things that we as individuals don't understand have to be left for the people that do understand where they are dealing with.
Leave stuff where it is if u don't know what it is, or u aren't sure what it could be/do.
In the Netherlands we have a saying: Wat de boer niet kent, eet hij niet. "What a farmer doesn't know, he won't eat.
U could end up with something more than some burned fingers.

Sorry guys... I think I was mistaken.... I am searching for the source piece now... but I believe it was a Grand Slam and NOT a Tall Boy that was found to be on display for 50+ years in Live condition.... Will post as soon as I can locate

Seeing this reminded me of a horror story that happened in Sth Yorkshire some years ago, late 70's or early 80's.
Ade, you may remember the incident, being fairly local to the area.

Some kids found some old mortar rounds in a stream in Conisbrough, near Doncaster. They did the sensible thing and called the police, plod turns up and decides to "make the area safe"(!) by taking said mortar rounds into custody.
Said police officer puts said mortar rounds into boot of his patrol car and travels by road to the local sub-divisional station, a distance of approximately 3miles, unescorted etc.
He then takes the mortar rounds and puts them in a cell before someone clicks that these are actually LIVE rounds. EOD called, attended and went absolutely ballistic, (no pun intended), before moving them to a safe area to be disposed of.
The police station was not only in a very built up area of Mexborough, Sth Yorks, it was, and is, at the junction of two major roads and, at the time, was a combined police, fire AND ambulance station!!
Unfortunately, I dont know what happened to the police officer concerned.
