Greetings From The Front

Nice image of a young soldier with ushanka, telogreika, shashka, and carbine.

There is a hand written greeting on the reverse that loosely translates to: "Greetings from the front - 1943. To my parents and three sisters - Don't forget about me. Warm regards to the rest of my family and all our friends."

His name is Nikolai (Kolya). No surname written.

Shashka (Шашка) is a cavalry sword. However, I think for parade and dress purposes, other RKKA troops, as well as NKVD carried it also...

A very emotional image and terrific example of the personalization of combat. The studio-like background also gives this a very eerie, lonely feel. Could it be an abandoned home they entered? This is one image that makes me wonder what happened to this fellow named 'Kolya' and then, what happened to his family. An A+ image, Richie.
