Wood probably shrunk because of the groundwater that evaporated out of it. I have the same with a pocket knife I once dug up. Although rather than the wood shrinking, it curled up on one side.

LOL you know I don't know what it looked like before it was cleaned but it is really a smooth blade and you can feel by the weight it was a quality Dagger
